Funnel Clouds Spotted North Of Colorado Springs
Funnel clouds or brief and weak landspout tornadoes may occur Thursday afternoon along a line of thunderstorms in Douglas and Elbert Counties. The thunderstorms developed in the early afternoon along a convergence, or wind shift, line to the north of Colorado Springs.
Landspout tornadoes occur when an existing circulation in the atmosphere is strengthened by an overhead thunderstorm. Wind shift lines typically have “eddies” or small wind swirls along them that can be stretched vertically into a thunderstorm that develops or moves overhead.
