Law enforcement group in favor of Amendment 64

Different groups discuss an amendment that would legalize and regulate marijuana like alcohol, and a group of former law enforcement officials is supporting the measure.

“We’re not going to have a free-for-all, go buy it like you buy a Hershey’s or ‘maybe I’ll get Snickers today ‘ or something,” said Tony Ryan, member of the Law Enforcement Against Prohibition group. “It’s not that way. There will be regulations.”

Amendment 64 would allow adults 21 and older personal possession of 1 ounce or less of marijuana and the growth of up to six plants. It would also impose a tax system on marijuana.

But not everyone supports the measure. The Colorado Education Association spoke out against it.

“We oppose Amendment 64 because of the risks it poses to children when adults have additional access to drugs,” said CEA president Kerrie Dallman. “And we want to make sure that marijuana approved for recreational use for adults 21 and older does not fall into the hands of youth, as well.”

Amendment 64 will appear on November’s ballot.
