What’s up with colored water out of your tap?
100 plus families in Colorado Springs are wondering what’s up with the colored water coming out of their faucets. Tuesday morning, I talked to Colorado Springs Utilities spokesperson Steve Berry about it. He put this on the City Utilities Facebook page after our interview.
” – An unusually high rate of hydrant use and other water use in your neighborhood due to rebuilding activity has caused water pipes to be scoured, shedding them of harmless minerals and other natural deposits resulting in periodic discolored water.
– If you experience discolored water, flush your household plumbing using an outside spigot first. As a secondary step, you may have to run your indoor faucets, cold water line, for a short time to completely clear the issue.
– Avoid using hot water until the cold water is completely clear.
– We’ve conducted over 500 water quality sample analyses at various points of the distribution system in Mountain Shadows, Peregrine, Pinon Valley and surrounding areas. We will continue to regularly monitor water quality throughout the rebuilding process.”
Bottom line, the water is safe. The Springs water system is usually flushed out each year around May or June. This year, the unprecedented water use during and after the Waldo Canyon fire has done the job a little earlier, than scheduled.
