Bats Force Middle School To Close
Middle school students in Cortez are set to return to class Tuesday after a bat infestation forced officials to close school for part of last week.
Students and teachers at Cortez Middle School were sent home Thursday while a company specializing in bat removal went to work.
Schools Superintendent Alex Carter tells the Cortez Journal that after a bat flew through a hallway and another one came in contact with a student, the district decided to cancel school for the rest of the week. No one has been bitten.
Officials believe five different bat colonies are in the school, and banishing the creatures will cost the district $24,500.
