Strip Club Proposed For Cripple Creek
Casinos ultimately may not be the only adult entertainment in Cripple Creek. Two casino employees want to bring a strip club to town called the Wild Horse Cabaret.
The club’s proposed location is the former Wild Horse Casino on Myers Avenue which closed three years ago. The building is a block behind the town’s row main of casinos on Bennett Avenue. The property currently is owned by the Double Eagle Casino in town. Two employees at that casino are the potential club owners, according to an article in the Gold Camp Journal. However the Double Eagle Casino says neither its management nor ownership is involved in any way in the proposed club.
Ray White, the city administrator, said the owners would have to buy the property. He said the city council would have to change an ordinance that currently limits sexually-oriented businesses to an industrial zone away from the casinos, and the owners would have to apply for a city permit. The town presently has no sexually-oriented entertainment, White said.
Although the Journal reported that the owners have support for their plan, many residents and visiting gamblers oppose it.
“I don’t think it’s something that’s wanted or really needed,” said Jason Qualls of Woodland Park. “People who come up here aren’t into that. It’s mostly older people here.”
“I wouldn’t come up here as often, said Donna Hayes of Colorado Springs. “I would definitely not do that because I can go to Vegas for that, and this is why I like this little community the way it is.”
“I don’t see what people get out of a topless club,” said Cripple Creek resident Robert Sisson. “I just don’t get it.”
The council adopted the ordinance several years ago, intending not to ban gentlemen’s clubs, but to regulate them. If the plan is approved, it could open the way for more clubs.
The council will consider the matter when it meets next Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. Public hearings are expected to be held before the council votes on the plan.
