A tiny computer program is chugging along to help prevent big water main breaks in your neighborhood in Colorado Springs. Colorado Springs Utilities has been feeding it information since the 1990’s. It’s filled with layer upon layer of information about city streets. Utilities water manager, Leah Ash tells me, the computer program is filled with decades of information about the system.
Colorado Springs has a 1900 mile water system. This computer programs helps crews in the field and planning experts in the office prioritize and plan which areas need to be repaired, a.s.a.p.
Seven years ago, Colorado Springs began a 20 year water main rehabilitation project. It’s estimated that 25 percent of the 1900 mile system is part of the rehab project.
