Southern Colorado Gets Help For Drought

Southern Colorado is finally receiving help for its drought conditions. Gov. John Hickenlooper sent a letter today to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack to request drought assistance for two additional counties.

Hickenlooper formally requested federal drought assistance for Elbert and Douglas counties. A declaration allows farmers and ranchers to seek emergency loans if they cannot obtain credit elsewhere.

Elbert and Douglas counties join 17 other counties that have sought drought assistance. These counties are Alamosa, Baca, Bent, Chaffee, Conejos, Costilla, Crowley, Custer, Fremont, Huerfano, Kiowa, Las Animas, Otero, Prowers, Pueblo, Rio Grande and Saguache.
