Phone Scam Targets Prescription Users
The El Paso County District Attorney’s office is waring the community about a new scam making the rounds nationwide.
There has been one victim in El Paso County, and people that have purchased prescription medications online are the most susceptible.
There could be a virus on your computer, or the site that you ordered from could be bogus.
Robyn Cafasso with the El Paso County District Attorney’s Office said that a man calls the victim from number that seems to be from Washington, D.C.
Cafasso said the caller claims to be a DEA agent, and that the victim will be going to jail for purchasing medication online.
“The caller is very convincing and talks very much like a DEA agent, and the citizens are concerned about their safety,” said Cafasso.
The red flag comes up after the conversation is nearing an end, and the caller says the victim can avoid an arrest and jail time if they pay a fine.
“If someone calls you on the phone and asks for money, don’t send them money,” said Cafasso.
The El Paso County District Attorney’s Office told Target13 Investigates that it is not illegal to buy medications online, as long as you have a prescription.
