New Leash On Life For Dog Thrown From Car
A dog thrown from a moving car near Teller County is back on her feet again after thousands of dollars in donations from the community and beyond.
A couple said they saw Mystery get thrown out of a car in front of them on Aug. 10 as they drove from Colorado Springs to Teller County. They brought the dog to the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter, where workers said she had a fractured femur and was going into shock. It wasn’t clear if she’d make it.
“It’s a horrible thing to think that someone would take such an innocent little animal like this and toss it out the window like a piece of trash,” said shelter manager Mary Steinbeiser.
Steinbeiser said she was worried her small rural shelter wouldn’t be able to handle the medical costs for Mystery, but after media reports on what happened, money started pouring in.
“We’ve received donations for her care from as far as England and also from British Columbia, Canada,” said Steinbeiser.
In all, $8,000 was donated. Steinbeiser said what’s left over goes to the shelter’s emergency medical fund for the next hurt animal.
Two weeks later, no one would guess that Mystery, believed to be a smooth-coated fox terrier, had been through such drama. Her legs are a little shaky, but she’s able to walk, and she has no fear of people. She’s living in a temporary home with a few other small dogs, awaiting adoption.
“She’s actually pretty darn healthy for being 11 years old and being thrown out of a car,” said Steinbeiser.
It seems Mystery had a tough life even prior to the accident. She had an untreated broken femur, her vocal cords were cut and she’s deaf.
“What a great outpouring and concern for such a great little dog,” said Steinbeiser. “I mean, it restores your faith in people.”
Authorities have not been able to track down the people who tossed Mystery from the car. There’s a $500 reward for information that leads to charges.
