Updated With Video: House Fire West Of Pueblo, “A Total Loss”
A home overlooking the Greenway Nature Center was destroyed Tuesday, after firefighters said it was struck by lightning.
The house on Nature Center Drive, which caught fire just before 8:00pm, was already well engulfed before crews arrived on scene.
Firefighters said their biggest challenge was that the home was outside of the fire protection district, which meant there were no hydrants and crews had to bring their own water supply.
Adding to the danger, according to Pueblo Sheriff Kirk Taylor, the home’s owner was storing thousands of rounds of ammunition. There was a concern that exploding rounds could injure an emergency responder.
Brush trucks from the county were called in to insure that the fire did not spread to surrounding acreage.
The Sheriff said the home is a total loss. Firefighters said the woman who lived in the house had helped design it.
The couple who lives there was home at the time, but managed to escape safely along with several pets.
