Day one of State Wrestling Class 5A/4A prelims
Pueblo East's L.J. Herburger got things started for the Eagles. He won his opening match by decision in dominant fashion in the Class 4A in the 106 weight class. The Eagles weren't done. Tatum Rivera beat Kobi Montano from Pueblo West by decision in a close match in the Class 4A, 126 pound weight class. Pueblo East, the defending team champion is off to a terrific start. Pueblo County is trying to reclaim the state crown for the first time since 2017 and Eric Griego is helping out. He pinned Pueblo West's Logan Anderson in the third round in the 113 pound weight class, "We really want it back. We let it slip away these last few years but we're coming back for it and we're going to get it. Me personally, I've been putting in so much work. I don't want anyone to take that away from me," says Griego.
But it wasn't all about the Pueblo schools, Coronado's Angel Flores was outstanding in his match. He pinned his opponent in the second round in the Class 4A 126 pound weight class. Then there's Nick Grizales from Cheyenne Mountain. The sophomore pinned senior Cruz Ortega in the third round to advance. Grizales was in control throughout, "Going out there, I was just a little bit nervous at first. Once I started getting warm, it was a lot better. This is my second year here. It wasn't as bad as the first year. We have some pretty strong guys coming up this year. I hope we can do it," says Grizales.
