As number of COVID-19 cases grow, so do concerns from hospitals

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- At UCHealth Memorial Hospital, Associate Chief Medical Officer Dr. David Steinbruner is one of many bracing for an influx of COVID-19 patients.

With the recent rise in cases, hospital capacity has become the focus of increased attention and concern.

Wednesday, El Paso County Public Health told county commissioners UCHealth Hospitals had expressed it could reach capacity if COVID-19 trend continues.

Dr. Leon Kelly, deputy medical director with El Paso County Public Health, said if people are not careful, overwhelmed hospitals could mean a reinstated a ban on elective surgeries.
