UPDATED: Clogged main leads to Fountain Creek sewage spill

Woodland Park Utilities says 665,000 gallons of liquid sewage spilled into Fountain Creek Monday.

Utilities Director Kip Wiley says crews began investigating at around 10 a.m. when low flow was detected at the main south side lift station off of Highway 24 north of Walmart.

Crews found the clog at around 1:45 p.m. and cleared it.

The main was clogged with a combination of rags and roots, which Wiley says is common.

City Manager David Buttery says within an hour of finding out of the spillage, crews blocked it and notified homeowners and government agencies downstream. Although they don’t think there is a big concern for the community, they are taking steps to ensure safety.

“The creek is able to handle these kinds of things relatively easy, but we’re doing our clean up, we’re cleaning up the site, making sure that people are notified, we’re willing to test water in the creek, we’re doing the right thing, whatever it takes to make sure people are safe,” Buttery said.
