Pueblo “Corn Maiden Mural” comes down

Another mural has become the victim of levee work in Pueblo. Construction to build a levee near Grand Avenue has been in the works since the beginning of March. The process to rebuild the wall is required to maintain floodplain certification by FEMA. Several murals have already been taken down.

On Friday, crews removed the “Corn Maiden Mural” on the Arkansas levee wall. Cynthia Ramu who created the mural based artwork by Judith Pierce, has been keeping a close eye on the construction. “Contractors have agreed to come out and be very gentle. They’re actually sawing around the seams of the concrete to try to carefully remove and relocate the top of the corn maiden, Ramu said.”

The paint used in the “Corn Maiden Mural” includes ashes from Pierce. Ramu who has worked on the murals for more 25 years, hopes to relocate the mural but has not said where. The first of this levee construction is expected to be completed by May.
