Major political parties rally support at Pueblo County conventions
Both major political parties in Pueblo County are gathering support for political leaders.
Local Republicans and Democrats held conventions on Saturday.
Democrats met at Pueblo County High School.
They selected Terry Hart to represent them in the June primary election for Pueblo County commissioner in District 1, along with Jeff Chostner for Pueblo County district attorney and Daneya Esgar for state representative of Pueblo.
Garrison Ortiz and Lianne “Buffie” McFadyen will face off in June for the Democratic nomination for Pueblo County commissioner in District 2.
One voter said she gets motivated during convention time.
“I was one of those who didn’t think your vote mattered, but I saw and found a race that was literally decided by three votes, and I’ve been a voter ever since. I’m part of the voter registration, which means I get people to vote,” Tatsue Maekawa said.
Republicans held their convention at Pueblo East High School.
They nominated Brian Mater for the Pueblo County commissioner District 2 seat.
Pueblo County Republican Vice Chair Victor Head said there wasn’t much interest from the Republican side to run for any more positions.
“Politics is messy, and it’s hard to get people to dedicate time,” he said.
Head said the party is grooming future candidates and looking toward the future to have more Republicans running for local political offices.
Both parties also elected delegates to represent Pueblo County during the Democratic and Republican state conventions.
