State researches rock slide solutions on I-70
Colorado is looking at using a rock shed to keep rock slides of Interstate 70 through Glenwood Canyon.
The Aspen Times reports a consultant hired by the state transportation department is researching the feasibility of putting a rock shed about a mile east of where a February rock slide closed a stretch of the interstate for nearly a week.
A Federal Highway Administration grant is funding research into the rock shed and other possible solutions.
Interstate closures make the Roaring Fork Valley economy vulnerable.
Rock slides pose a danger to bridges and can cause damage to concrete and guardrails.
The Glenwood Canyon rock shed would have to cover four traffic lanes.
Next year is the earliest a decision would be made on the possible project.
