Report: Pueblo has highest per-capita homicide rate in Colorado
New analysis out Sunday show Pueblo has the highest per-capita homicide rate in the state.
According to a report in the Denver Post, Pueblo’s per-capita homicide rate is 12 for 100,000 residents. Colorado Springs is 5.8 per 100,000 residents, while Denver is 7.5 per 100,000 residents.
The report says a sharp rise in gang-related violence and understaffing are playing a role.
KRDO Newschannel 13 broke the story in November that Pueblo police staffing levels have not changed since 1974.
The district attorney proposed a tax initiative to hire 50 more officers. Pueblo police has said the department wants to hire 14 more officers. Seven recruits are going through the academy right now.
