Colorado Springs Police searching for driver that hit patrol car on I-25 and drove away
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Colorado Springs Police (CSPD) are searching for the driver of a white or silver SUV after they reportedly hit a patrol car pulled over on I-25 Monday night.
According to police, the CSPD officer was pulled to the side of the road to issue a traffic violation for a different vehicle, just north of the exit for S. Academy Boulevard on southbound I-25. That's when an oncoming vehicle failed to move or yield to the officer, ultimately colliding with the patrol vehicle before driving off.
The officer was not in the patrol car at the time, and neither he nor the person he was contacting were injured in the incident.
According to Colorado law, section 10.24.108 titled "Actions on Approach of Authorized Emergency Vehicles" states, "the driver of an approaching or passing vehicle shall proceed with due care and caution and yield the right of way by moving into a lane at least one moving lane apart from the stationary authorized emergency vehicle."
The law goes on to say that drivers who fail to "yield the right of way by moving into a lane at least one moving lane apart from the stationary authorized emergency vehicle," are committing careless driving.
Colorado Springs police say they believe the vehicle is a white or silver SUV with "fresh damage to the passenger side of the vehicle."
