Coffins take over Manitou Springs
Halloween has come early to Manitou Springs.
People packed downtown Manitou for the 21st annual Emma Crawford Coffin Races.
Organizers said the race started after Crawford died from tuberculosis in the late 1800s. Her fiance carried her coffin to the top of Red Mountain for burial. The coffin then slid down the mountain inspiring the event.
“Since then, they made this into a Halloween event of racing coffins in her honor,” organizer Karissa Ballard said.
But as for Army veteran Fred Hinton, he and his team of military veterans built a coffin in honor of America’s heroes.
“We designed this bomb. We went with the World War II era. We represent everyone who served our country,” he said.
More than 10,000 people were at this year’s race.
