Volunteers spend day cleaning up Evergreen Cemetery

COLORADO SPRINGS COLO. (KRDO) — Volunteers worked Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery in Colorado Springs to trim trees and prepare for the winter months.

Saluting Branches is an organization that helps maintain the landscape at veteran properties. Since so many vets are laid to rest at Evergreen, it was the perfect spot for the organization to bring their next volunteer mission.

About 40 volunteers donated their time and tools to Evergreen Wednesday. There are more than 10,000 trees on that property so they are making as much progress as they can.

Matt Puckett is the MATT vegetation specialist for Black Hills Energy and the site coordinator for Wednesday’s cleanup. He said when trees aren’t properly maintained it can cause a hazard.

“There’s a lot of different hazards that can be in that tree. Whether it’s dead branches, ya know split tops from our windstorms. Low hanging branches,” Puckett said.

The cleanup is not just for safety, it’s also to keep the grounds beautiful for all the vets that are laid to rest there and all their families who continue to visit.
