The School Buzz: Colorado Springs teacher joins American Cancer Society ‘leadership summit’ in D.C.

An English teacher from Colorado Springs has been joining the fight to stop cancer, stepping into a bigger role that's reached the Washington Monument.

Julie Harris teaches at Liberty High School and is the sponsor for the school’s National Honor Society. She also stepped up to help with the American Cancer Society recently and was invited to the group’s leadership summit in D.C. For her trip, local residents, who have been affected by cancer, gave Julie dedication bags to place in front of the Washington Monument.

Harris says serving with the American Cancer Society is so rewarding because she’s had a lot of cancer in her family and that she has a genetic mutation that predisposes her to early breast cancer. She says she joined ACS in hopes to fight now so that “I won’t have to fight later.”

“I have heard so many touching stories from colleagues, students, and members of the community that remind me why we need to fight," said Harris.

"My hope is that we can grow our cancer-fighting initiatives throughout the district and greater Colorado Springs community to the point that we can raise tens of thousands of dollars and enact meaningful legislation in our state and country that supports cancer patients and their families," she said.
