Witness recounts deadly multi-vehicle crash in Pueblo, share photos of the wreckage
PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO)-- Monday, the Pueblo County Coroner identified the young woman who died in a four-vehicle crash along Pueblo Boulevard and Lehigh Avenue.
According to the coroner, 23-year-old Makayla Ellen Gallegos died from injuries sustained in the Saturday crash.
The Pueblo Police Department told KRDO that leading up to the deadly crash, a white Lexus was weaving in and out of traffic on southbound on Pueblo Blvd. That's when the Lexus crossed the center dividing line and went head-on into another vehicle. Two other vehicles ended up getting hit as well.
According to police, Gallegos was in the back seat of the Lexus.
In addition to Gallegos's death, three other people suffered serious injuries.
While it's still an open investigation, the PPD said speed, alcohol, and drugs are all possible factors.
One witness, David Hayden, is a photographer in Pueblo. He told KRDO that he was driving to a photo shoot when he saw the white Lexus weaving in and out of traffic.
He said he had never seen anything like this before. Hayden went on to say he watched the crash unfold in front of him.
"That was unsettling."
According to the Pueblo Police Department, no one in the Lexus was wearing seatbelts.
"As far as we can tell, that was the leading cause of the death," said Sgt. Michael Sincerbox with the Pueblo Police Department.
