Swim Beach at Lake Pueblo reopens after bacteria-related closure

PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) -- Rock Canyon Swim Beach at Lake Pueblo State Park has now reopened following a week-long closure due to bacteria buildup in the water.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) closed the beach in late July after the water tested positive for "higher-than-allowed" levels of E.coli. Since the closure, CPW has tested the water repeatedly and the levels have now returned to normal.

According to CPW, its staff follows stringent testing protocols established by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE). CDPHE rules mandate that the swimming area must be closed any time a test sample shows greater than 235 E.coli per 100ml of water. CPW did not say what the levels were at the time of the closure.

“It’s fairly common for these bacteria levels to jump after we get big rainstorms,” said Joe Stadterman, Lake Pueblo State Park Manager. “The health and safety of visitors is our top priority, so it's necessary to temporarily close the swim beach to protect the public.”

CPW said the beach is typically open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday through Monday, until Labor Day. It is closed Tuesday and Wednesday. There is no extra fee for the beach, but a $10 daily park pass is required for each vehicle entering the park.
