Snow makes it a busy week for Pueblo airport workers
Workers at Pueblo Memorial Airport have kept busy this week because of all the snow.
Aviation Director Mark Lovin said crews have been working 12-hour shifts since Sunday to clear the runways for aircraft to land.
Lovin said plowing a runway is different from plowing a road. Crews can’t use salt because it would corrode planes. Workers use a special fine sand, de-icer, blowers and plows.
If a runway isn’t completely cleared of snow, pilots could have a difficult time landing planes.
“If we were to do nothing with it, then it would be unacceptable to land or take off on and we would essentially close the airport down,” Lovin said.
Pueblo Memorial Airport didn’t have any canceled flights, but it did experience three delays.
