UPDATE: Attorney who defended Kobe Bryant retained to represent El Paso County sheriff

The attorney who defended Kobe Bryant against sex assault allegations in Colorado has been retained to represent El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa.

Maketa faces accusations of sexual favoritism and creating a hostile work environment. He is accused of having inappropriate relationships with three women in his office and promoting them to positionsthey didn’t deserve.

El Paso County spokesperson Dave Rose said Maketa suggested attorney Pamela Mackey represent him. Rose said Mackey has been informally retained by the County Attorney’s Office at a rate of $250 per hour.

El Paso County commissioners need to approve a formalized retention agreement including rates and defined scope of service. The issue is expected to be discussed sometime in the next two weeks.

“By law, the county has the responsibility of defending the sheriff and his employees for acts which occur in the course of employment. This is true for the other statutory offices as well. When interests may conflict, as in this case, the county has the responsibility of making sure all parties have proper counsel,” said Rose.
