Shooting injuries man and shatters businesses’ windows

Three Colorado Springs businesses have to replace their windows after an early morning shooting.

Police arrested 24-year-old Raoul Jones for shooting a man. That man is recovering in the hospital.

It happened around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning (5/4/14) in the parking lot of Yolo’s Bar near Platte Avenue and North Murray Boulevard.

Windows were boarded up at two businesses and a third window was broken in the strip mall. A laundromat, insurance company and hair salon all are victims of the shooting.

“I thought it was just fireworks and everything and I come here today to find out it was gunshots. I was a little surprising to me,” said LaundryTown customer and nearby neighbor Marcus Stevens.

“There’s a lot, too much violence around this area,” said neighbor James Smith.

Shattered glass sat in the shopping mall parking lot. Police say several cars were damaged, too.

“I guess I was kind of surprised because nothing’s been shot up or anything, like no businesses around here have been shot up or anything like that,” said LaundryTown customer Ashlie Toppin.

“Made me want to move,” said Smith.

The manager of LaundryTown didn’t want to go on camera, but told KRDO Newschannel 13 someone called her at 1:30 a.m. about the shooting. She found a bullet inside the laundromat. She said she “didn’t sign up for this” when she took the job.

Toppin said she has two kids. So that’s what kind of makes it a little bit worse when you know there’s shootings and things like that because you know when you have kids, you have to protect your family, she said.

The shooting victim couldn’t protect himself, but he’s lucky to be alive.

“That guy’s in the hospital right now because some idiot decided to grab a gun and decided to just start shooting up,” said Stevens.

Investigators found several guns and shell casings. Detectives are looking into exactly what happened.
