Colorado Springs Utilities gives advice on staying safe during a winter cold blast

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- The National Weather is calling the cold temperatures across Southern Colorado an "arctic cold front" and there are a few things you should do around your home to prepare for frigid temperatures.

First, Colorado Springs Utilities said to leave your faucet running at a drip to prevent freezing and leave cabinet doors open around plumbing to allow the warmer air in.

It's also important to have your furnace serviced to ensure it's working properly and efficiently. Not only will it make your home warmer it will also lower your utility bill.

You can also try opening the blinds on your south-facing windows when it's sunny outside to let the light naturally heat up the room. Adding insulated curtains on all your windows can also help keep the cold air out and the warm air in.

Spring Utilities says to also fix any drafty windows by simply purchasing coverings at a local hardware store for a fairly inexpensive price.
