CC Drops Series Finale 6-2
Thirty minutes into Saturday’s contest at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center, Colorado College simply found itself in too deep of a hole.
St. Cloud State University struck for the first four goals of the contest, and although CC never quit skating in an attempt to overcome the early deficit, the host Huskies posted a 6-2 victory in the finale of their two-game National Collegiate Hockey Conference series.
The Tigers, showing signs of offensive life for the second night in a row, got second-period tallies from freshman defenseman and senior center . But another hot goaltender – in this case SCSU’s Ryan Faragher – prevented them from matching their season high of three in a game.
Faragher, a junior, finished with 20 saves compared to 19 by Colorado College senior .
Senior team captain Nic Dowd scored twice for No. 2-ranked St. Cloud State, while junior defenseman Andrew Prochno and sophomore forward David Morley recorded a goal and an assist apiece.
CC matched the Huskies’ eight shots on goal in the opening 20 minutes, but found themselves down 2-0 after 20 minutes of play thanks to red lighters by Prochno just 1:32 in and sophomore forward Jonny Brodzinski at 8:55.
Brodzinski’s goal was his second of the weekend and seventh in six career games against the Tigers, who dropped to 1-8-2 overall and 1-5-2-1 in NCHC play.
When Ryan Papa and Dowd lit the lamp just 3:02 apart midway through the second frame, it was 4-0 at the game’s halfway point.
Freshmen and Olofsson teamed up on a power play to get Colorado College on the board at 13:17 of that middle period, Olofsson scoring for the second time in three outings when his shot from the point found its way past Faragher through traffic in front. Roos, who leads CC with three goals, collected his first career assist on the play.
Collett converted from the high slot at 17:51 of the stanza, following a faceoff at center ice and quick exchange with freshman winger , but not before David Morley restored SCSU’s four-goal lead seven seconds earlier. After 40 minutes of play, it was 5-2 in favor of the home team. Dowd completed the scoring with 3:45 left in the game.
