Airman sentenced to confinement after escape

An Air Force airman who escaped during a bathroom break on his way to the Teller County jail has been sentenced to four and a half years in years in confinement.

The Gazette reports Senior Airman Herbert Mullens of Peterson Air Force Base was sentenced Friday following a trial by court-martial. He was convicted of escaping pretrial confinement, heroin use, driving while under the influence, desertion and burglary.

The court-martial moved to kick Mullens out of the Air Force after he’s served his time.

Authorities say Mullens escaped while being taken back to jail in April. He had been held there after an arrest on suspicion of drunken driving and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was captured after he was spotted while riding an ATV.
