Corey Handy Accepts Plea Agreement
A Colorado Springs man accused of trying to shoot his girlfriend, a good samaritan and her two kids accepts a plea agreement on Friday.
Corey Handy pleaded guilty to attempted 1st degree murder and will spend 30 years in prison.
In an El Paso County courtroom on Friday, Handy said, “I didn’t want to engage. I was lost in the moment… thought I’d scare them so they’d pull over. In the moment I didn’t intend to hurt anyone.”
El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputies said the incident happened on Aug. 10, 2011 at the intersection of Marksheffel and Constitution.
Deputies said the then 28-year-old Corey Handy kidnapped his girlfriend Jacqueline Maes at gunpoint and threatened to kill her. Maes jumped out of the car and a woman close by picked her up.
Moments later sheriff’s deputies said Handy caught up with them firing four shots into the vehicle. No one was hurt.
“My son is not a monster, he’s a good person,” described his mother Leanne Snell.
Snell said her son has lost everything over a fight with his girlfriend. She blames Maes for escalating the situation.
“She coerced him over there (Handy’s house). She planned the whole thing, she put a gun to his face and when she couldn’t figure out lock on it – she dropped it and when running to intersection,” she said.
Snell said Handy made the best decision given his options. But Snell believes the sentence is much longer than he deserves. She said it comes down to the court and investigators taking sides.
