Red Light Cam Safety
Preliminary results are in from a two year study of how effective red light cameras are in Pueblo. Currently they are installed in two different city intersections. One is at US 50 and Norwood. The other cameras are up and operational at Prairie and Northern. At the Prairie and Northern location there has been a significant drop in serious potentially deadly broadside accidents. Before the cams went up in 2009, broadsides were 26% of all accidents at this location. Two years later, that number of broadside accidents has dropped to five percent.
Muriel Tincher owns a business on the corner of Prairie and Northern. She told me that she thinks the cameras do the job to stop red light runners and make the intersection safer for those who drive and walk it.
City Traffic Engineer Pepper Whittlef tells me, “I would think based on our safety results, I think we’ll see the cameras stick around and might see the program expand.”
The Pueblo City Council will see the results of the full traffic study by the end of January.
