“Justified”: CSPD officer will not face charges in shooting death, as picketers gather outside DA’s office

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - On Wednesday, Dec. 10, the Colorado Springs District Attorney's Office determined that Colorado Springs Police Officer Connor Wallick was justified in his use of deadly force when he shot and killed Alex Martinez-Sarmiento earlier this year.

However, a local activist group claims that Martinez-Sarmiento's family deserves answers from the DA, and they will be picketing until DA Michael Allen meets with the family.

This follows the DA's official review of the July 5, 2025, shooting in downtown Colorado Springs, where 26-year-old Martinez-Sarmiento died on the scene after being shot three times in the back by Wallick.

Security camera and body worn camera footage helped the DA piece together the events from that night.

CSPD officers responded to an area near East Kiowa St. and Tejon St. for reports of a man screaming and holding what appeared to be a semi-automatic rifle. Cameras appear to show Martinez-Sarmiento grab a gun from a car. Wallick pursued Martinez-Sarmiento, shooting him in the back after he made a motion similar to drawing a firearm out of his waistband.

The DA's determination means no charges will be filed against Wallick.

The Colorado Springs Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is now calling on DA Allen to meet with Martinez-Sarmiento’s family.

"We condemn this statement and demand that District Attorney Michael Allen move to indict Connor Wallick," the group wrote on Facebook, along with signs for a weekly picket starting Thursday, Dec. 11.

The picket organizers plan to gather at 8 a.m. outside Colorado’s 4th Judicial District Attorney’s Office on East Vermijo Ave.
