Deadly officer-involved shooting investigation underway in Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) - The Colorado Springs Police Department and the El Paso County Sheriff's Office are on the scene of an officer-involved shooting that resulted in one death.
Officers responded to an armed robbery in the area of Powers Blvd. and Galley Rd. at 3:37 a.m. Thursday. Colorado Springs Police Sergeant Jason Newton tells KRDO Newschannel 13 that at around the same time, a man approached an off-duty Colorado Springs Police officer who was in the drive thru of a Carl's Jr. in his personal vehicle, and told him that he had a gun.
Investigators say the off-duty officer fired at least one shot at the man, killing him. The officer was not hurt.
The El Paso County Sheriff's Office has taken over the investigation into the shooting. The Colorado Springs Police will continue its investigation into the robbery. Investigators will be at the scene for most of the day Thursday. At this time it's unclear if these two incidents are connected.
