How your diet affects your sleep
We've all heard it's important to get eight hours of sleep a night. But did you know that what you put in your body can affect your quality of sleep and your health?
"That sleeping recharges the cells to produce the energy to go through the functions of the daily process," said integrated biochemical nutritionist Kelly Calabrese.
Sleep disorders can be brought on by stress or hormonal imbalance, but often times what you eat before bed, or even your bedtime routine, can get in the way of achieving that full eight hours.
"You don't want to be eating meat before bed because it's hard to metabolize. You don't want to be drinking coffee or anything with caffein. You shouldn't be drinking alcohol before bed," said Calabrese. "Make sure to eat and exercise at least three hours beforehand."
If you must have a bedtime snack, Calabrese recommends almond butter on a slice of organic apple to curb the midnight cravings.
