Crowley County substitute teacher accused of sexually assaulting a student in a borrowed car

CROWLEY COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) - Thursday, Crowley County Sheriff's deputies arrested 20-year-old Shelby Clarke for sexual assault on a child by one in a position of trust. They are now continuing to investigate allegations Clarke had sex with a student and sent nude photos to multiple others.

According to investigation records, one student told deputies he had sex with Clarke on two occasions in a red Mazda SUV. However, that car was not owned by Clarke.

"My wife, my daughter, they won't ride in the car. They think it's disgusting what happened in that car," said Dustin Bryan.

Bryan tells KRDO13 he lent Clarke his car as an act of kindness. Bryan was old friends with Clarke's mom and says he stepped up to help when Clarke's car broke down recently in La Junta.

For about the last month, Bryan says Clarke has been driving his Mazda.

Two weeks ago, Bryan says Clarke called him saying investigators were impounding the vehicle.

Sheriff's records show in late April, the superintendent of the Crowley County School District reported he believed Clarke, at the time a substitute teacher, was possibly having inappropriate relationships with male students.

According to records from the Crowley County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) that detail interviews with witnesses, victims, and Clarke herself, one student told deputies he and Clarke had sex once before an extracurricular practice and once when she picked him up from his house.

Other students told deputies Clarke sent them nude photographs.

The concerns were initially reported to CCSO by Crowley County School administration. April 25, Superintendent Juan Ramirez told the sheriff he was concerned a substitute teacher was involved in inappropriate relationships with male students.

According to case records, Clarke came to the Sheriff's Office with Ramirez and the Crowley County High School Assistant Principal on April 25. Sheriff Terry Reeves interviewed Clarke that day.

When Reeves asked Clarke if students had revealing pictures of her, records show Clarke told deputies she had an "Only Fans" account where she would post sexual images and videos, but students should not have access to them.

Clarke denied having sex or inappropriate relationships with students. She went on to tell Sheriff Reeves that over the previous weekend, she was drunk and sent explicit photos to her husband, but she didn't know how students would have gotten them.

Reeves then told Clarke they would be launching an investigation into the school saying she may be involved with a sophomore.

Arrest records show a CBI analyst removed multiple sections of the car where Clarke allegedly sexually assaulted the student to test for DNA.

"They cut everything out in the seats and the armrest and then the, uh, the headliner, and I was just completely disgusted. I was like, why," Bryan remarked.

Bryan says he doesn't want to think about what may have happened inside the vehicle. "It's just tainted," he said. "And you know, it's disgusting."

KRDO13 reached out to Shelby Clarke asking whether she had sex with a student or engaged in behavior she believed was wrong. She responded back "No comments at this time."

The Crowley County School District says she is no longer employed by the district.

Clarke is out of jail. She is due back in court on June 11th.

Crowley County Sheriff's Office Incident Report: The Allegations

KRDO13 obtained the incident report from the Crowley County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) which shows the investigation officially began April 25.

Around 12:30 p.m. on the 25th, the report shows Sheriff Terry Reeves arrived to the Crowley County Sheriff's Office to find Superintendent Juan Ramirez, Assistant Principal Trish Guillermo, and another woman waiting to talk with him on the Sheriff's Office porch.

Records show Ramirez asked to speak with Sheriff Reeves alone, and once he was inside with the Sheriff and Guillermo, they told Reeves the other woman with them was 20-year-old Shelby Clarke.

Ramirez said Clarke was a substitute teacher who may be involved in an inappropriate relationship with male students, and who may have sent nude photographs to students.

According to Sheriff's Office records, Reeves spoke with Clarke immediately after the conversation with Ramirez and Guillermo. Clarke said she was confused as to what was going on.

In the report, Reeves writes that he told Clarke there were photos sent to students of her "less than fully clothed." Clarke then responded that she had an Only Fans page and shares revealing photos there, but she did not know how the students would have gotten them.

The report shows Reeves told Clarke they were going to launch an investigation into the school saying she may be involved with a sophomore. Clarke responded that she was not involved with a student, she was married and had an 8 month old child.

In the following days, the report shows deputies interviewed a different substitute teacher, who was a witness involved with the sexual assault case.

The second substitute teacher told deputies she was engaged in sexual activity with her boyfriend and with Clarke over the weekend. The report shows the substitute teacher told deputies there was excessive drinking and also sexual interactions and Clarke took pictures of the activity without her consent.

According to the documentation by deputies, the second substitute teacher was featured in sexually explicit photographs alongside Clarke that were sent to students. The second substitute teacher told deputies she did not consent to the images being shared.

The incident report features multiple other interviews with people who appear to be students and victims. The report is redacted to hide information revealing the students' identities.

However over the course of the 14-page report, multiple interviewees tell deputies they received revealing photos of Clarke over the social messaging platform, Snapchat.

The report reveals one student told deputies he had sex with Clarke on at least two occasions. He told deputies he had sex with Clarke before an extracurricular practice. The second time, he said he texted Clarke and she picked him up from his home. That student told deputies both sexual encounters happened inside a red Mazda CX7.

According to the CCSO incident report, multiple female students told deputies Clarke would make inappropriate comments to them about male students in the class.

In once excerpt of the report, a Sheriff's Corporal writes a female student told him, "Mrs. Clarke one day as she was substituting for the weight class teacher, approached her and a friend, to tell them about the boys that were 'hot', and she would like to 'f*** them.'"
