Shawnee Peak Fire 50 percent contained
The Shawnee Peak Fire, initially reported Monday afternoon in Park County, is now 50% contained, according to a release from the USDA Forest Service and Pike National Forest.
Investigators determined that the fire was the result of a lightning strike. Firefighters will continue to patrol the fire perimeter along the east and southeastern perimeter to increase containment of the fire. There are no structures at risk at present.
The fire was first reported at 37 acres but grew to 55 acres. There is a total of 167 firefighting personnel involved, which includes three interagency Hotshot crews, four helicopters, one wildfire module, and one Type 2 Initial Attack Crew.
According to the release, the fire continues to be “managed under a full-scale suppression strategy, which prioritizes firefighter and public safety while utilizing tactics that lend to the highest probability of success.”
The Pike and San Isabel National Forests issued a formal fire closure order for the area around the Ben Tyler North trailhead and trails within the Shawnee Peak Fire. You can find a comprehensive list of closed trails here.

A wildfire named the Shawnee Peak Fire was reported at 3:15 p.m. Monday in Park County near Shawnee Peak, about six miles southwest of Bailey, according to the U.S. Forest Service.
As of 5:50 p.m. the wildfire is 37 acres and 0% contained. No structures have been reported as threatened. The cause is unknown.
A hotshot crew and air support are on the scene.
As of 9 p.m. a total of 3 Hotshot crews have been assigned to this fire. One of those crews is currently working the fire and the others will arrive Tuesday. Two additional hand crews and additional helicopters have been assigned to the fire and will also arrive Tuesday.
