CSPD holds monthly event to serve younger kids in the community

Several parents gathered at the Colorado Springs Police Department on Saturday to learn about drones with their children.

CSPD holds a monthly event called “Connecting Kids with Cops” as a way to serve the younger community and to bond with future police officers.

Jill Beyer, who brought her two children, said it’s a great way for kids to learn about police work.

“They get to know the cops and see that they’re actually real people,” Beyer said. “And instead of strangers, they can be friends.”

The police officers leading the workshop focus on one aspect of their job each month. For July, they focused on how unmanned aerial vehicles help them in search and rescue mission, and in catching suspects.

“The kids are fun,” said Officer Fabiola Jacquez. “They ask you great questions and they help you be innovative. They help you think outside of the box.”

Officer James Thurman, the chief pilot of the drone program, said the parents and their children showed a lot of interest in his presentation.

“I really enjoy doing stuff like this,” Thurman said. “Just connecting with the community on another level.”

The officers said next month they will be focusing on the motorcycles of the local police force. You can find more information on next month’s event by following the CSPD Facebook page.
