Ukraine has improved conditions for its Hungarian minority. It might not be enough for Viktor Orbán

BEREHOVE, Ukraine (AP) — Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has long accused Ukraine’s government of violating the rights of an ethnic Hungarian community in western Ukraine. Orbán insists the Hungarian minority must be allowed to speak their native language in schools and public administration, and has threatened to block Ukraine’s admission to the European Union. Ukraine amended its laws to comply with EU membership requirements, and restored many of the rights demanded by Budapest. That brought relief to the ethnic Hungarian community, but Hungary’s government has indicated it’s not fully satisfied. The issue could become a potentially explosive sticking point as EU leaders meet Thursday to try and break Orbán’s veto of a major aid package earmarked for Kyiv.
