Great Sand Dunes declared International Dark Sky Park

Colorado has another new International Dark Sky Park: Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of the best places in the state to gaze at the night sky.

Great Sand Dunes is one of three parks in Colorado to earn the designation. Just last month, Dinosaur National Monument was named a Dark Sky Park.

That means the next time there’s a meteor shower, you’ve got a couple of the best spots in the world to check it out right here in the Centennial State.

“A starlit night at Great Sand Dunes can bring opportunities for wonder, perspective, and a more intimate connection with the natural world than we have in the daytime,” says Park Ranger Patrick Myers.

Special events will be held in late summer to honor the park’s designation.
