Colorado police to use GPS trackers on fleeing vehicles
Police in Colorado have begun using GPS trackers that can attach to fleeing vehicles in an effort to reduce dangerous chases.
The Denver Post reports that the Denver Police Department on Monday began testing the devices that use an adhesive to fasten onto vehicles attempting to elude police.
The GPS units are propelled from launchers on the front of patrol cars, allowing supervising officers to track vehicles using a phone app and arrange stops at safe locations.
Police say the devices can continue tracking vehicles from dozens of miles away and in neighboring communities.
Police say they recognize the possibility of injury from a projectile about the size of a soup can and have developed policies to minimize risk, including a prohibition on tracking motorcycles or convertibles.
