Colorado Springs jewelry store employees on edge after three robberies
It’s not hard to see the extra protecting outside local jewelry stores in Colorado Springs.
At Luisa Graff Jewelers, a security vehicle sits out front, and there are bars on the windows, but that’s just a fraction of what they’re doing to keep them safe from a robbery.
Most of their protection can’t be revealed, otherwise, thieves would use that to their advantage, but Matt Coleman, a board member for the company says they’re certainly aware of the recent threat.
He says, “It’s not simply, we don’t want to be next, we don’t want anyone to be next.”
Last Friday, two jewelry stores, Moretti Jewelers on Constitution and Jared’s on Woodmen Road were both robbed. In both incidents, thieves walked into the store with a weapon, breaking the displays and taking off on foot with valuable items.
On Tuesday, Glenn’s Jewelry and Loans was the next victim. Just after 10 a.m., four men walked into the store, breaking displays and leaving on foot with jewelry.
Coleman says it’s certainly putting the local industry on edge.
“When you have events like this that have taken place in Colorado Springs, everyone’s a little on edge. You think a little deeper, you take a closer look,” he says.
After the first robbery, phone calls were made between the stores to warn other owners they could be next.
Coleman says, “there’s a communication that takes place to find out what were the tell-tale signs, what information can be shared so the staff can be alerted to things to look for.”
Until the thieves are caught, jewelry stores in Colorado Springs are taking extra measures to make sure they’re not next.
