La Plata Co. Humane Society getting dogs from Texas shelter
Hundreds of adoptable dogs at an overcrowded shelter in south Texas are about to get a second chance at finding a new home in the Centennial State.
The La Plata County Humane Society and Best Friends Animal Society say more than 800 dogs will be moved from the Palm Valley Animal Center in Edinburg, Texas, and about 50 of them will be heading to Durango.
The dogs started to arrive Thursday and the western Colorado rescues expect to have the remainder by Thanksgiving so that families can adopt a puppy in time for the holiday season. The dogs are said to be “highly adoptable” and just look at them — they’re adorable!
It’s a bit of a drive from Colorado Springs to Durango, but it might be worth it to find your new family member.
According to the La Plata County Humane Society, the animal center in Texas gets about 32,000 pets each year. The transportation efforts will take care of about five weeks’ worth of dogs the shelter receives.
