The Military Family: Pine Creek High School Senior’s art displayed in White House

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) -- Tucked in a corner of the White House, hangs Asha Agrawal's master creation.  It's part of a new initiative -- The Military Children's Corner -- by First Lady, Jill Biden.

Her creation, entitled "Journey," is a summation of her experiences as a child of a military member: moving every couple of years, crisscrossing the world; her Dad's service, every bit hers. 

A red ribbon encircles the globe; the Air Force insignia stretches forward to that of the Space Force.  It's emblematic of her Dad's career, who is a Colonel in the Space Force, after spending 20 years in the Air Force.

"I'm definitely proud of him, and happy that he's my Dad.  Even being in the military life, my dad has always been one of the big figures in my life," said Agrawal, a senior at Pine Creek High School.  "He was able to help out in the creation, in the process of it."

Asha's mom got a call from the White House, informing them that "Journey" would be included in the rotation of pictures selected from an earlier competition with the Military Child Education Coalition.

"It was kind of unbelievable.  That's a major achievement for me," said Agrawal. 

As part of the honor, Agrawal's family and friends were given a private tour of the White House, courtesy of the Secret Service. 

Amid the flurry of moves, art has been Agrawal's constant: "I know each time we've moved, I've made slightly less and less friends each time.  But through my art, I am able to connect with other people, like other artists."

And while Agrawal admits art has always been part of her life, she gives credit to her teacher, Tiffanie Davis, for giving her an added skill set in graphic arts.

"She helps us learn how to be creative."

Davis beams with pride.

"She's a wonderful young woman and I'm just super proud of her.  I could just not be more proud of her.  I feel like everything I've been able to teach her, she's been able to take it all. She's just taken and run with it, and I just think that this is the first little bit of amazing that it going to snowball into many more opportunities for her," said Davis. 

Upon graduation, Agrawal hopes to take on an internship to further study the arts.

"It confirmed to me that I actually have a future in art, not just like a hobby or something I can do for fun," said Agrawal.
