Balloons grounded Sunday at Labor Day Lift Off in Colorado Springs
The second day of the Labor Day Lift Off has been grounded.
Crews made the decision to cancel Sunday’s flight around 7 a.m.
Officials said wind at ground level is fine, but at 1,000 feet it measured 20-25 mph and was deemed unsafe.
A ground show is still scheduled. There are some storms in the forecast. But for now, things are dry.
For those that stuck around Memorial Park after the grounding announcement, they were still able to enjoy vendors, eating competitions, and the Air Force Parachute Team. Spectators saw the team drop from 4,500 feet in the air to land on the park grounds.
After the announcement was made a large group of pilots gave a huge groan in unison. Jason Gabriel, the pilot of the blue ’76 balloon was one of those pilots. However, he understands that the decision had to be made.
“The most important thing for us is the safety of our passengers and the crowds,” said Gabriel. “So we just decided it would be safer to stay on the ground.”
As of right now, Sunday’s balloon glow is set to begin at 6:30 p.m., as long as the weather permits.
