22nd and 23rd fatalities this year
Two accidents happened Friday morning, killing two people and leaving many to winder about Southern Colorado’s increasingly dangerous roads.
The first call came in just after 2 when a motorcyclist lost control at Power and Palmer Park, killing the rider and leaving the bike in shambles.
only minutes later, another call came in, this time an accident off Hancock and Nichols, where 44-year-old Kevin Werre smashed his jeep into a concrete wall after running a stop sign.
Werre was taken to the hospital, his brother, 48-year-old Vernon Werre, a passenger in the vehicle, didn’t make it. Werre is now facing charges of vehicular homicide and DUI.
“I would hate to be him after her sobers up,” said one Colorado Springs resident. “He’s gonna have to live with that for the rest of his life.”
These were only two of the five accident that have happened in just the last week.
According to Sergeant John Koch from CSPD, the main reason for these crashes is attempted left turns where people end up turning into cars or hitting pedestrians.
8 our of the 23 crashes that have happened this year are also caused by alcohol, and of the 4 automobile fatalities this year, 5 of them weren’t wearing seat belts and in 4 of those crashes people were ejected.
