Procession for fallen Fort Carson Soldier who died during training
The body of a fallen Fort Carson soldier was brought back to his hometown in Indiana this morning , accompanied by an honor escort.
First Lieutenant Clay Cullen, age 25, died, when the Apache helicopter he was flying went down during training at Fort Irwin, California, on January 20. A fellow member of the 4 th Infantry Division, Chief Warrant Officer 2 Kevin Burke, also died in the helicopter crash.
Cullen’s body was flown to Indianapolis International Airport, and the motorcade wound its way toward Bicknell, Indiana, roughly 100 miles away, early Wednesday.
The Indiana State Police, Bicknell Police Department and the Patriot Guard took part in the honor escort. Area schools were put on a 2-hour delay so that students and teachers could stand along the route and pay tribute.
Visitation will be held on Friday February 2, with the funeral service being held Saturday at the North Knox High School.
Ian Cullen, said of Clay on Instagram, “My brother was funnier than me. He was taller than me, stronger than me, and Clay’s life was richer than mine in so many ways.”
The family of CW2 Burke said his funeral will be held on February 21 at the Miners Foundry center in Nevada City, California.
Burke’s mother told KRDO Newschannel 13 her son meant everything to her, saying, “He was kind, he was generous and was good at everything he did.” A service is also expected to be held at Fort Carson. KRDO is working to get details of that memorial.
