Leading GOP candidate for Colorado governor drops out of race
Former congressman Tom Tancredo announced he’s no longer campaigning for Colorado governor because he doesn’t believe he has the money to take on a Democrat candidate who has already spent more than a million dollars in the race.
Tancredo spoke to Colorado Politics and said he feared that he would win the Republican primary but ultimately lose the general election, the outlet reported Tuesday.
Tancredo has run for governor in the state before, once as a third-party candidate in 2010 and again in 2014, when he lost the Republican primary. But in recent polls, Tancredo led the nine-person pool of GOP candidates.
Rep. Jared Polis of Boulder has already spent nearly $1.4 million on his campaign, which Tancredo anticipated would overwhelm his campaign.
Tancredo’s campaign team decided months ago that he needed to raise $150,000 by the middle of January to have a viable campaign, according to Colorado Politics, but they fell short. His campaign finance reports say he raised $74,480 through the end of the year and had $62,996 in reserve. Tancredo
Tancredo didn’t issue a public statement Tuesday, simply taking to Twitter to write, “Hey Sniwflakes [sic]. You can come out if [sic] your safe spaces!”
Seventeen hours before that tweet, Tancredo wrote, “I will win the #Republican primary, that much is certain.”
