Fire weather, heat and strong storms

monument (1)

TODAY: Mostly sunny skies are expected for places in the Pikes Peak Region for the first half of today. It becomes windy and dry for much of today, so red flag warnings are in place from Fremont County through the San Luis Valley as winds gust to 40 mph. Highs will be in the 80s and 90s today as those winds come off the mountains. In fact, Colorado Springs will be just shy of record highs today. Later this afternoon, showers and storms move across the southern mountains and push north and northeast into the state. This will be between 3 and 9pm tonight. A few of those storms may become strong to severe this afternoon and evening. Frequent lightning, hail and wind will all be threats with these storms today. Most areas stay severe weather free and will just see some general shower and storm coverage.

TONIGHT: Storms linger through midnight. We will see slow clearing through the morning and lows dropping to the 40s and 50s.

EXTENDED: More widespread red flag warnings are out for Wednesday. Continued dry air and wind gusts to 40+ mph will allow for quick-spreading fire concerns. We stay mainly dry through Thursday until more widely scattered showers and storms arrive over the course of Friday. Highs will vary between the 70s and 80s the rest of this week.
