Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Very Warm & Windy – 5/28/2022

Overview:  We're tracking wind and fire weather for the holiday weekend.

Today:  Partly cloudy to mostly cloudy and windy at times with conditions becoming favorable for the spread of wildfires during the afternoon over the plains and mountain valleys. High temperatures will reach the 80s and lower 90s for the plains, 70s and 80s over the mountain and high mountain valleys.

Tonight:  Partly cloudy & breezy at times with low temperatures in the 50s for the plains, mainly 40s for the mountains and high mountain valleys.

Sunday:  Mostly sunny early, windy at times and not quite as warm with high temperatures in the 70s and 80s for most areas, but the far eastern plains could reach the lower 90s, and some mountain communities may remain in the 60s. Fire weather is again expected for parts of the area Sunday with the highest likelihood along and south of the Arkansas River.  An upper-level storm will pass mostly to our north, but the southern extent of the wave could clip northern parts of our coverage area resulting in increasing clouds and spotty showers and/or thunderstorms over the Pikes Peak Region during the afternoon. Dry air at lower levels suggests chances for significant rainfall are not high.

Extended:  Slightly cooler and windy again on Memorial Day (Monday) with high temperatures in the 60s and 70s along and west of I-25, and 80s over the southeastern plains.  We expect a sunny start to the day with increasing clouds and a slight chance for a brief shower or crack of thunder over and near the mountains during the afternoon. Like Sunday, we don't expect much rain.  A more significant push of cooler air will arrive Tuesday and Wednesday bringing a better chance for rain, and maybe some thunderstorms to parts of the area. Temperatures on Wednesday may struggle to rise out of the 50s for many areas north of the Arkansas River until late in the day.  Thursday and Friday look warmer and dry along and west of I-25, but isolated showers and/or thunderstorms could develop over the far eastern plains.
