Marty’s Saturday Morning Forecast – Warmer Afternoon – 6/12/2021

Overview:  We’re tracking a slight chance for isolated to scattered thunderstorms at times over the next week, but mostly we’re focusing on a stretch of toasty weather.

Today:  Mostly sunny this morning, then partly cloudy, breezy and warmer this afternoon with high temperatures in the 80s to lower 90s for the plains; 70s and 80s for the mountains and high mountain valleys.  Isolated thunderstorms could develop mainly south of the Arkansas River late this afternoon, and if they do then a stronger cell could produce strong wind gusts, brief downpours, frequent lightning, and small hail, but these will be few and far between if they develop at all.

Tonight:  Any thunderstorms over southern parts of our area should dissipate after sunset, except perhaps over Baca County where a few showers are possible well into the night.  Low-level moisture will work towards the mountains through the night and may result in areas of low cloud cover and/or patchy fog over the plains by morning. Low temperatures will fall into the 50s and 60s for most areas, but the high mountains valleys should cool into the 40s.

Sunday:  Any morning low clouds and/or fog will break up quickly leaving most areas partly cloudy. The afternoon will be partly cloudy, breezy, and hot with high temperatures in the 80s and 90s.  Isolated thunderstorms are more likely over more areas on Sunday, but we still only expect about a 10 to 20 percent coverage of showers and thunderstorms across the area.

Extended:  The air will remain very warm to hot for much of next week, and although a brief shower could develop over the mountains it appears we have little chance for significant rainfall through Wednesday. There are indications that the atmosphere may start to moisten up a little during the latter half of the week bringing at least more afternoon clouds to help take the edge off the heat a little. There may also be a slightly better chance for isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms over mainly the mountains and immediately adjacent plains starting Thursday. After several days in the 90s and 100s for the plains we’re hopeful a weak cold front will arrive by Friday helping to cool the air a bit.
